Choosing a Memorial
Where most families start
There is no right order to do this in, but it usually comes down to four things: the shape of the memorial, the stone it is cut from, what goes on it, and what the cemetery or churchyard will allow.
We do not quarry or shape raw stone ourselves. Memorials are ordered pre-shaped, cut and polished from specialist suppliers, and the finishing work, inscriptions, artwork and detailing, is all carried out here in Ferndale. That is also why lead times vary so much between an in-stock shape and a bespoke one, which is covered onour process page.
Shape and size. Cemeteries set maximum heights and widths by section, so we check what is permitted before you settle on a design.
Stone and finish. Black and grey granite are the most hard-wearing and hold gilding best. Lighter stones and marble have a softer look.
Lettering and artwork. Gold leaf, painted lettering, etched portraits, carved roses and hand-painted emblems are all done in our workshop.
Room for later. If more names may be added in future, we allow for that in the layout from the start.
Price Lists
Our new price list is on its way
FR Terrazzo is preparing an updated memorial price list, which will be published on this page as soon as it is ready. In the meantime we will give you a written price for exactly what you are considering, with no hidden extras.

Every style below is something we have made and installed. Once you have a shape in mind, the relevant supplier brochures will show you the full range of sizes and stone colours it comes in.

Cremation Tablets & Plaques

When a second or third name needs adding, the new lettering has to match what is already there, the font, the size, the spacing and the finish. We take the details from the existing stone so the addition does not look like an afterthought.
An inscription still needs a permit signed by the registered grave owner, and we prepare that paperwork for you in the same way as a new memorial. Where the existing lettering has weathered, it is often worthre-gilding the original inscription at the same time so the whole stone reads evenly.

Renovation & Re-gilding
Bringing an older memorial back
Gold leaf and painted lettering do not last forever outdoors. Over twenty or thirty years the gilding lifts, the paint fades and the inscription becomes hard to read. Renovation work puts that right without replacing the stone.
We clean the memorial, re-cut or re-fill the lettering where needed, re-gild or repaint the inscription, and re-fix the stone properly on its foundation if it has started to lean. It is usually far less expensive than a new memorial, and it keeps the original stone in the family.
Cleaning and removal of weathering and staining
Re-gilding in gold leaf or repainting the lettering
Re-fixing leaning memorials to current fixing standards
New vases, flower containers and accessories fitted
Resurfacing & Polishing
Stone resurfacing, slab polishing and repolishing

Whether it is for memorials, headstones, or architectural features, we restore surfaces to their original beauty with expert care. A dull, scratched or pitted surface can often be brought back to a full polish rather than replaced. Enquire today for pricing and further details.

Membership
The National Association of Memorial Masons
Members of the National Association of Memorial Masons work to the association’s code of practice, covering workmanship, materials and how customers are treated throughout.

Truly exceptional
Matthew at FR Terrazzo was the first to reply to my bespoke request for a monument for my Dad. The quote was best value (out of 5 suppliers) and approach was very straightforward and honest, with no hidden extras. The service from day one to getting the stone installed was truly exceptional and instilled complete trust and confidence, at a very difficult time for my family and I. The quality of the stone and workmanship is way beyond my bespoke requirements and literally outshines every other stone I have ever seen. My Dad would be so happy with it. In every respect, my expectations have been exceeded and I would highly recommend using. Thank you Matthew, it really does mean the world.
Monument at Ynysybwl Cemetery, excellent job
Excellent service very professionally executed. Very competitive prices, that were significantly lower than the other quotes I received. The monument is a fitting remembrance to my parents.
Excellent workmanship
Excellent service from start to finish! Matthew came to my house to explain and show me samples of work he had previously done. Very pleasant and patient young man who carried out my instructions to the letter for my late son’s headstone. The result is absolutely beautiful! Excellent workmanship!
Brilliant from start to finish
Matthew has been brilliant from start to finish. His communication was faultless and he kept me informed of the process. Nothing was too much trouble when getting the wording and layout right. Great price too when compared to local competitors. Extremely pleased with my finished headstone, which is exactly how I imagined it would be. Thank you so much for making a difficult time a little easier.
Excellent
I needed my dad’s name added to my mum’s grave and had originally asked a larger local company to do this. However, they were hopeless and after months hadn’t even done the paperwork. FR Terrazzo were recommended and they were perfect; prompt, responsive, did precisely what they said they would do at exactly the time they said they would. Dealt with everything without me needing to do a thing! Provided computer generated images of the completed headstone so we could get it just right and sent me a photo of it in position. Very reasonably priced too. Thank you
Excellent work
Matthew was so approachable he advised us regarding the font, the lay out and was very helpful throughout the whole process. He re-gilded my father’s inscription and added my mother’s inscription, he secured the base for the headstone and supplied a new flower pot for the base. We are so pleased with the stone and the finished product. A very helpful and calm experience at the workshop made a very emotional decision so much easier thanks to Matthew
